Dave’s first band 'The Revival' was formed in 1989. The line-up consisted of Dave on guitar, Ian Lindsay on bass, Richie Yates on guitar and a succession of drummers. The band played a selection of 50’s and 60’s standards and played their first gig at 'The Cambridge' pub in Liverpool. The gig was not an amazing success and one wag was heard to shout at the end when the drunken crowd cheered “Don’t clap too hard or they might come back !”. Despite the comment the band were paid the agreed £110 and got the hell out of there ! The Revival with Richie Yates at The Cambridge pub

'The Revival' eventually found a permanent drummer. Mal James had been a friend of Ian’s for some years when, as kids, they had “jammed“ in his garden. He joined the band in late 1989. Although they had played a number of venues around Liverpool who, frankly, paid better the band decided as a laugh to re–approach 'The Cambridge' as a test to see if they were any better!
It was Mal’s first gig. He was very nervous and played the songs at a phenomenal speed. At one point during the intro of 'Pretty Woman' his drumstick went flying out of his hand. He only had two sticks so he had to stop and retrieve it. The audience enjoyed it although the manager remembered the band and only paid them part of the fee !

After a while it was clear that Richie Yates’ guitar style (very metal!) was not right for the band. He had recently joined another band, 'Slug', as a sideline. They were enjoying a success locally and had amassed a considerable following. Richie left leaving the door open for Dave Hanratty.
Dave had played in a number of bands. His style was very different from Ritchie but still not right. His commitment was also lacking. He lasted a very short time, quitting only minutes before he would have been sacked…...
